Manual Handling

Guidance for visiting groups to help reduce the risk of injury when moving furniture, equipment or materials during their stay.

1 Policy statement

Manual handling should be carried out safely to reduce the risk of injury to visitors, leaders and staff, in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.

2 Furniture and equipment

Visitors should not attempt to move heavy furniture or equipment alone. Large or awkward items should be moved by several people using safe lifting techniques.

3 Group leader responsibility

Group leaders remain responsible for supervising participants when moving equipment or rearranging spaces during their stay.

4 Staff assistance

Where assistance is required, Centre staff should be contacted before attempting to move large or heavy items.

5 Reporting hazards

Any hazards, damaged equipment or unsafe situations should be reported to Centre staff as soon as possible.
